REVIEW / Extremely Powerful Capybaras (Switch)

I walked into Extremely Powerful Capybaras expecting a novelty name and a cute gimmick, and what I found is an honest-to-goodness little bullet-hell roguelite that leans hard on chaotic co-op mayhem. The preview video below sells the tone: goofy capybara protagonists, colorful arenas, and an unapologetically loud soundtrack that keeps you moving. The game is clearly built around quick, replayable rounds that encourage grabbing a friend and seeing how absurd the combinations of weapons and skills can get.

Artistically, the game is a delight. It features chunky, charming sprites, smooth animations, and levels that pop with personality. Every enemy type has readable silhouettes (important in a bullet hell to figure out how strong the enemy is) and the UI is bright and playful without feeling cluttered. The presentation is one of the main hooks: it makes failing feel funny rather than punishing, which keeps runs emotionally light even when things go south. I especially loved the expressive animations that give each capybara hero its own identity.

Combat is immediate and punchy. Thereโ€™s a satisfying feeling to chaining weapon pickups and class upgrades mid-run. Extremely Powerful Capybaras gives you a lot of temporary toys to experiment with. When a run reaches almost the end, the battlefield becomes a glorious mess of crossfire and layered abilities that creates beautiful chaos. The pacing of encounters is aggressive in a good way: short rounds and clear goals (i.e., defeat enemies) make each session feel focused.

That said, the depth of Extremely Powerful Capybaras is uneven. Underneath the fun surface, I kept wanting stronger synergies between weapons (actives), passives, and the upgrade system. Some items feel redundant or strictly worse than others, which narrows meaningful choice and reduces the reward of experimentation. I still had runs where an odd combination made something new and hilarious happen, but those moments felt rarer than I wanted.

Performance and polish was supposedly improved since launch but arenโ€™t flawless. I noticed minor stuttering and resolution issues while playing it on the Switch. Thereโ€™s nothing game breaking, but I suggest that you check your settings before diving in for longer sessions. You know how it is with bullet hell games; sometimes that one second makes or breaks the run.

One of the gameโ€™s best qualities is how forgiving it is socially: the tone and short-session structure remove some of the typical roguelite intensity. You donโ€™t need to memorize enemies or their attack patterns to enjoy a session. In fact, you can bounce between classes, die spectacularly, laugh, and queue another run. That accessibility makes Extremely Powerful Capybaras an easy pick for casual groups and newer players who want a fast co-op loop.

On the flip side, the lack of in-game tutorials can trip newcomers up. The difficulty ramps quickly once the enemies and modifiers start stacking, and the game sometimes expects you to learn by brutal trial and error rather than guided onboarding. I enjoy discovering things for myself, but a few optional hints or a basic combat primer would have made the early game smoother.

Contentwise, thereโ€™s enough content in  Extremely Powerful Capybaras to enjoy for many hours: multiple classes, weapon types, hidden unlockables, and modifiers that change runs. Still, if youโ€™re chasing deep meta progression or intricate buildcraft, this title is more about short, sharable bursts of fun than long-term complexity. Itโ€™s excellent for quick sessions and social chaos rather than endless theorycrafting.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Extremely Powerful Capybaras even with its quirks. Itโ€™s charming, often hilarious, and ideal for friends who want a noisy, high-energy co-op romp. With a few balance tweaks and continued polish to online stability, it could easily become a staple โ€œget together and playโ€ game in any friend group. Right now itโ€™s a solid, good-time experience. Itโ€™s not groundbreaking, but consistently enjoyable.

Extremely Powerful Capybaras is a colorful, chaotic roguelite that shines in co-op play and charm but stumbles with shallow depth and occasional hiccups. Fun, frantic, and best with friends.
