Recently, Bungie announced a delay for the next Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape. This aptly named expansion is significant for it concludes the game’s ten-year running narrative known as the “Light and Dark Saga“.
The penultimate Destiny 2 expansion was originally set to be launched on February 27th, 2024. For one reason or another, however, the newly updated launch date is now set for June 4 next year, marking it a summertime title. Details as to exactly why this delay has occurred are sparse other than what can be found in the official statement from Bungie. We’ll let you give that a proper read and make your own assumptions based on the info. Better to hear things from the horse’s mouth and all that.
Fans who were itching for that initial February release might not have too much to fret about. It has been revealed there is a content set preparing to be released in April, hopefully tiding over players, and allowing those of you who have dropped out of the loop to reacquaint and refresh your memory of the story so far. This can’t be a bad thing if you’re a little bit lost as to where you’re up to regarding the plot.
Ever since Destiny 2 was released, the game has received regular content updates, with each of the major expansions releasing within a 1-2 year window of each other. Each of these expansions has been a major milestone for the game both in terms of gameplay and narrative. With The Final Shape coming as a conclusion to an era, expectations are high and players will want to round things off in true Destiny style. It has to be said that the currently promised feature set as it stands is somewhat underwhelming compared to many of the previous expansions. Just speculation on our part, but perhaps this extra development time will be used to finish shoring up the narrative or sneak in a couple new features, (or both.) We don’t know for sure but we certainly don’t have to wait too long to find out.
Destiny 2 is free to play on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox One / Series X for those of you who have never indulged in this long-running saga. If you haven’t and you’re interested in playing, you’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do if you’re going to be ready for the final chapter. It may well be worth getting your skates on.
